Germany

The Alps, constituting Europe's most extensive mountain system are nothing short of awe inspiring. The Alps encompass parts of France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and most of Liechtenstein. Beginning along the Mediterranean, at the French-Italian border, as a relatively narrow chain, the mountains gradually widen into a broad arc west of Vienna. More than 600 miles long and 125 miles wide, they cover an area of more than 80,000 sq. miles.

The View From the Top

Nestled in these mountains in Southern Germany is one of our favorite destinations, Garmisch. This little Bavarian town boasts some of the best skiing in the world, and in fact, hosted the Winter Olympics in 1936. Garmisch is also home to the tallest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze, at nearly two miles high. On several occasions, we rode a cable car to the top of this incredible mountain. On a clear day (which is not the norm, unfortunately), the view is breathtaking. Also, at the top, you can actually walk across the border into Austria.

The town of Garmisch comes to life in the evening, when the weary skiers come down from the slopes. A festive atmosphere exists, with people milling about the Marienplatz in the town center. There are numerous pretty boutiques in which to shop and many excellent restaurants to choose from. We think that Garmisch and the Bavarian Alps are a "must see" for anyone visiting Germany.
